Equalizer settings that actually make a difference
What each frequency band does, four starting points worth trying, and why turning everything up makes music sound worse.
Most people open an equalizer, drag the bass slider to the top, decide it sounds muddy, and never touch it again. That's a fair reaction to a bad first move — boosting one band by 10 dB is almost always worse than the flat setting you started from.
An equalizer is a corrective tool, not a loudness tool. Used properly it fixes a specific problem: a headphone that's dull, a phone speaker with no low end, a recording that's harsh. Here's what each control actually does, in any mp3 player app ios users have installed.
What the bands mean
A 10-band equalizer covers human hearing from about 32 Hz to 16 kHz. Grouped by what you hear:
- 32–64 Hz — sub-bass. Felt more than heard: the low rumble of a kick drum, cinema explosions. Phone speakers can't reproduce this at all, so boosting it there does nothing but eat battery and add distortion.
- 125–250 Hz — bass and low mids. Body and warmth. Too much is the "boomy" sound people complain about.
- 500 Hz–1 kHz — mids. Where most of the music lives, including the fundamentals of voices. Cutting here makes a mix sound hollow; boosting makes it boxy.
- 2–4 kHz — presence. Consonants, snare crack, guitar bite. Small boosts make vocals clearer; large ones cause listening fatigue within minutes.
- 8–16 kHz — air. Cymbals, sibilance, the sense of space. A little adds sparkle; too much turns every "s" into a hiss.
Four starting points
Treat these as directions, not prescriptions. Adjust by 2–3 dB, not 10.
Muddy, unclear vocals. Cut 250 Hz by 3 dB, lift 3 kHz by 2 dB. Removes the congestion that hides the voice rather than shouting over it.
Phone speaker sounds thin. Cut 60 Hz (it can't play it anyway), lift 200 Hz by 3 dB and 2 kHz by 2 dB. You're using the range the speaker actually reproduces.
Harsh, fatiguing headphones. Cut 3 kHz by 3 dB and 8 kHz by 2 dB. Many cheap earbuds are deliberately bright; this brings them back.
Bass without mud. Lift 60–80 Hz by 3 dB, cut 200 Hz by 2 dB. That's the actual recipe behind good "bass boost" — add the low end, remove the range that turns into porridge when it accumulates.
Cut, don't boost
The most useful habit in equalization: when something bothers you, ask which frequency to *remove* rather than which to add.
Two reasons. Boosting adds gain and can push the signal into clipping, which sounds like distortion on loud passages. And boosting one band raises the whole apparent volume, which your ears interpret as "better" for about thirty seconds before fatigue sets in.
If you want more bass relative to everything else, cutting the mids gets you there with less damage — and then raise the overall volume.
Presets are fine, understand them
Presets like Rock, Pop and Jazz are just saved curves. Rock usually lifts both ends and scoops the mids; Jazz tends to be gentler and mid-forward.
They're a reasonable starting point and a bad ending point, because they were designed for an average recording on an average headphone, and you have neither. How to actually tune it
1. Pick one track you know extremely well. Not a demo track — something you've heard hundreds of times.
2. Start flat.
3. Change one band by 3 dB.
4. Toggle the equalizer off and on. If you can't reliably tell which is which, the change is too small to matter — undo it.
5. Repeat for at most two or three bands.
Then leave it for a day and listen again. Ears adapt within minutes, and a setting that seemed obviously better last night often sounds overdone in the morning.
When not to bother
Bluetooth on a noisy commute. Ambient noise buries anything subtler than a few dB. Noise isolation does more for the sound than any curve.
Already-good headphones. A well-tuned pair with a decent recording usually wants a flat setting.
Bad source files. A 96 kbps MP3 is missing information; no equalizer restores what isn't there. Boosting the highs on a low-bitrate file mostly amplifies compression artefacts.
The short version
Small moves. Cut before you boost. One track you know. Toggle to compare. And if you can't hear the difference in a blind flip, there isn't one worth keeping.
