FLAC on iPhone: what plays it and what doesn't

Whether an iPhone can play FLAC, where the format actually fails, and how to tell lossless from a file that was merely renamed.

Yes — an iPhone plays FLAC. It has since iOS 11, and no conversion, jailbreak or desktop trick is required. What trips people up is everything around that fact: the Music app won't touch your FLAC files, AirPods don't play them losslessly, and half the "FLAC" downloads floating around are MP3s with the extension changed.

Why Apple Music won't take your FLAC

Apple has its own lossless format, ALAC, and the Music app is built around it. FLAC and ALAC are technically close — both are lossless, both compress to roughly half of WAV — but the Music library only accepts what it accepts.

This is a library decision, not a hardware limit. Third-party players read FLAC on the same device with the same chip, because iOS itself can decode it.

Where FLAC actually falls short on a phone

Bluetooth. This is the big one and it surprises people. Any wireless headphone, AirPods included, receives audio over a Bluetooth codec — AAC, SBC, aptX or LDAC depending on the pair. All of those re-encode the stream. Your FLAC is decoded on the phone and re-compressed for the trip to your ears.

So on wireless headphones, FLAC and a good MP3 are much closer than the file sizes suggest. Wired listening is where lossless earns its keep.

Storage. A FLAC album runs 250–400 MB against 60–100 MB for a high-bitrate MP3. Four hundred albums in FLAC will fill a 128 GB phone on their own.

Battery. Decoding FLAC costs slightly more power than MP3. On a modern iPhone the difference is small enough to ignore for a few hours of listening, but it exists.

How to check a file is really lossless

Renaming song.mp3 to song.flac doesn't make it lossless — and plenty of downloads sold as lossless are exactly that. A real FLAC keeps audio detail up to roughly 20 kHz and above; a file that came from a 128 kbps MP3 has a hard cut at 16 kHz that no re-encoding can restore.

The same routes as any other audio: iCloud Drive, a local Wi-Fi transfer from your computer, the Files app, or AirDrop for a couple of tracks. Because FLAC files are big, the Wi-Fi route is usually the fastest — nothing has to upload to a cloud and come back down.

Import while connected, then test in airplane mode.

Tags: the part that decides whether your library looks sane

FLAC stores tags in a format called Vorbis comments, and rippers vary in how thoroughly they fill them. Missing tags aren't a playback problem — the track will play — but the album will scatter into "Unknown Artist", and compilations will split into a dozen one-track albums.

Fix tags on the computer with something like MusicBrainz Picard before you transfer. It's the single biggest difference between a library that feels organised and one that feels broken, and it has nothing to do with which player you use.

So is it worth it?

If you listen on wired headphones or through a decent DAC, and you have the storage: yes, keep your FLAC and use a player that reads it.

If you listen on AirPods on a bus: the honest answer is that a 256 kbps MP3 will sound the same to you, and it will cost a quarter of the space. Keep the FLAC as your archive on a computer, put MP3s on the phone.

Either way, the iPhone isn't the obstacle. It plays both.
