A sleep timer for music that doesn't drain your battery
Why music playing all night costs you more than battery, how iOS timers compare, and the settings that make falling asleep to audio actually work.
Falling asleep to music is a good habit with one bad side effect: the music doesn't stop. Six hours later the phone has played an entire library to an empty room, the battery is at 40%, and if you were listening to an audiobook you've lost your place somewhere in the middle of the night.
A sleep timer solves it in one setting. This guide covers what iOS gives you for free, where it falls short, and how to set this up so you can listen to music offline free of both a subscription and a dead battery in the morning.
What all-night playback actually costs
Audio playback with the screen off is one of the cheapest things a phone does — a few percent an hour. The problem isn't usually the decoding.
It's what comes with it:
- Bluetooth held open all night. The radio stays awake, and so do your earbuds, which will be flat by morning.
- Streaming. If the audio comes over the network rather than from a local file, you're keeping Wi-Fi or cellular working for eight hours. This is by far the biggest drain of the three.
- Sleeping in earbuds. Not a battery issue but worth saying: hours of in-ear pressure is uncomfortable, and the volume you chose while awake is louder than you want at 3 a.m.
Playing local files with a timer avoids all of it.
The Clock app trick
iOS has a hidden sleep timer that most people don't know about, and it costs nothing:
1. Open Clock → Timer.
2. Set a duration.
3. Tap When Timer Ends and scroll to the bottom of the list.
4. Choose Stop Playing instead of a ringtone.
5. Start.
When it fires, whatever is playing stops — any app, including ones with no timer of their own.
Its limits: it stops abruptly rather than fading, it cuts mid-word if you're listening to a book, and you have to set it every night from a different app than the one playing.
Timers inside the player
A player with its own timer fixes the two annoyances. Tunio's runs 15 to 90 minutes, or "end of the current track", and fades out over the last seconds rather than cutting.
The fade matters more than it sounds. An abrupt silence is itself a small event — enough to surface someone who was just drifting off. A gradual fade tends to go unnoticed.
"End of track" is the right choice for audiobooks and long mixes. It stops at a boundary, so tomorrow you resume at a clean point rather than mid-sentence.
How long to set it
Most people fall asleep in 10 to 20 minutes. A 30-minute timer covers that with margin and is the sensible default.
Longer isn't better: if you're still awake at 45 minutes, the music probably isn't the thing that's going to get you there, and you're just running the radio.
Getting the rest of the setup right
Volume. Set it lower than feels right while you're awake. A quiet room at night is much quieter than the room you set the volume in.
Airplane mode + local files. Cuts the biggest battery cost and stops notifications waking you. This only works if your music is actually on the phone — which you can verify by force-quitting the player in airplane mode and pressing play.
Skip Bluetooth if you can. A small wired speaker on the nightstand beats earbuds for both comfort and battery.
Low Power Mode. Halves background activity and doesn't affect local playback quality at all.
What to play
Anything with a predictable shape. Music with sudden dynamics — a quiet passage followed by a chorus — will pull you back up.
Ambient, instrumental, rainfall, a familiar album you've heard a hundred times. Familiar matters: novelty keeps attention engaged, and attention is the thing you're trying to switch off.

- Timer at 30 minutes, or "end of track" for a book
- Fade-out enabled if the player has it
Do it once and it becomes automatic. The morning difference — a phone at 90% instead of 40%, and a book that resumes where you actually stopped listening — is the whole point.
